I was biking down West St today and this tough looking older man pulls up next to me in a truck, and says, "be careful on your bike!" And waves as he speeds ahead of me.
This has happened to me a bunch in Oakland - not in a patronizing way, though. In a kind neighbor way. In a "sweetie, darling, please be careful" way. I crashed my bike a few weeks ago and had my knee bandaged for awhile and had so many kind strangers ask about it in a genuinely concerned way. I had farmers at farmers markets giving me discounts (perhaps their produce would heal me!). I'd have conversations with strangers who wouldn't mention my knee until the end - "Goodbye, I hope your knee feels better!" That kind of unprovoked kindness is what makes me an optimist.
